ArtLab – Pompeiian Paper Pots

ArtLab workshops provide kids with the opportunity to explore ideas, materials and techniques that respond to HOTA Gallery exhibitions to create unique artworks of their own. Recommended for ages 6-12 years.

The ancient city of Pompeii reveals a great deal about ancient Roman life, from the way people decorated their homes, to the way they socialised and observed ritual practices. Surviving in great numbers are ceramic vessels in a range of shapes and sizes - each with specific functional and cultural uses. Alongside amphoras for wine and pots for cooking, a number of decorated vessels were discovered in temples and religious complexes. Adorned with fantastical creatures, fruits and figures these objects are as mysterious as they are beautiful!

In this hands-on making workshop, we will craft our own three-dimensional vessels inspired by those found in The Magic Rites Complex. Using a variety of card and paper-based materials we'll model our pots and then bring them to life with our own magical symbols.

We encourage you and your adult to explore the Inside Pompeii: Origins of a European Way of Life exhibition before or after the making activity.

Recommended for ages 6 – 12 years. Children must be accompanied by an adult or carer and cannot be left unsupervised at any time. Thank you for your understanding.
