Sunroom – Pompeiian Paper Mosaics
The Sunroom program provides a safe creative space for art-making, creative play and exploration for adults with a disability.
The excavation of Pompeii in the mid-18th century revealed a host of well-preserved intricate mosaics, adorning the walls and floors of public and private spaces across the ancient Roman city. Geometric tiling and figurative imagery reveal refined and detailed artistry, with scenes often reflecting mythological narratives.
In this workshop we will visit the Inside Pompeii: Origins of a European Way of Life exhibition, exploring the ancient city through the lens of Luigi Spina. We then work with an array of coloured and patterned paper tiles to create geometric patterns, at the centre of which we will draw or paint mythological scenes, to create our own mosaic-inspired artworks.
No prior art making experience is necessary, only a willingness to engage your imagination, curiosity and sense of play.
Recommended for ages 16+
