QSO SidebySide Program

Queensland Symphony Orchestra's Side by Side Program provides successful applicants with personalised mentoring and one-on-one instruction from a QSO musician, leading to a performance with the Orchestra. Previously known as the Prodigy Project, this program supports the Queensland Instrumental Music curriculum by offering opportunities for secondary school students to become musicians. It reinforces the Australian Music Curriculum’s aim of developing technical and expressive skills through music-making. The program is free, and locations are announced annually. More information, including program dates and application guidelines, is published on this page and via the QSO Education email list throughout the year.

Please apply directly through the QSO website: https://qso.com.au/education/programs/SidebySide

ACARA 9.0 – Music Years 7 to 10

Music: Exploring, Developing and Performing Students investigate how composers and performers use the elements of music, compositional devices, and instrumental techniques across a range of cultures, times, and contexts. They develop and refine listening and instrumental skills to manipulate and interpret these elements, creating expressive effects and reflecting on their own and others’ music to inform their choices as performers. Students rehearse, perform, and present music they have learned, applying relevant techniques and performance skills with confidence and artistic intention.

QCAA – Music 2025 v1.2

Units 1 & 2: Designs and Identities Through Side by Side, students experience how music is designed and how it communicates identity. Performing alongside professional musicians, they explore how composers combine elements such as pitch, rhythm, texture, timbre, and structure to create meaning. Students also consider how repertoire expresses cultural, social, political, and personal identities, supporting the development of their own musical voice while refining technical and ensemble skills.

Units 3 & 4: Innovations and Narratives Side by Side immerses students in innovative and narrative-driven repertoire. They explore how composers push boundaries, experiment with sound, and manipulate musical elements to tell stories, convey drama, and evoke atmosphere. Working within a professional orchestra, students refine performance and interpretive skills while experiencing firsthand how music communicates ideas, emotions, and narrative to an audience.
