Working with the Grain – Kyogi Workshop with Mika Nakamura Mather
Centuries ago in Japan, before paper was widely available, records were written in ink on thin sheets of wood veneer called kyogi. Although the kyogi were produced primarily as a practical means of keeping of records, they were also naturally beautiful thanks to the patterns created by the wood grain.
This workshop encourages participants to look at things differently and see the natural patterns and shapes in the wood grain of kyogi sheets. They will then use the kyogi, as well as Japanese pigments or watercolours, to help bring their own personal memories to life.
Skill level: No previous art training or skills are required; the workshop is open to anyone who loves creating art and making memories.
Please bring: A photograph of an outdoor location that has a special meaning for you. It could be a place you grew up in, a beach that you used to go to every summer, a park you would visit with your family, a street you walked home along from school – somewhere outdoors that holds a place in your heart.
The main focus of the image must be the landscape/location. There can be figures in the image but they should not be dominant.
