Permanent/Contract Positions

CURATOR – OUTDOOR PROGRAMMING AND PUBLIC ART

POSITION OVERVIEW

As Curator of Outdoor Programming and Public Art – you will be responsible for overseeing the existing sculpture walk and developing and activating the Artscape. You will have proven experience in the development and implementation of public art projects, including permanent, temporary and ephemeral works and you may also have worked on visual arts projects in an arts festival capacity. Reporting to the Head of Curatorial Projects, you will also work closely with colleagues in the Programming team to deliver great visual arts experiences and grow new audiences.

This is a full-time fixed-term role for 3 years. Regular attendance at exhibition openings and other events outside hours will also be required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (Summary)

  • Collaborating with HOTA precinct architects to develop the Artscape, including drafting a plan for guiding the development of the Artscape, taking into consideration existing sculptures in the current sculpture walk and opportunities for new commissions and acquisitions.
  • Overseeing the ongoing maintenance of the current sculpture walk within the HOTA precinct, including cataloguing, identifying sculptures for conservation, movement of sculptures, and coordinating loans.
  • Initiating and project managing commissions of permanent sculptures and temporary installations within the HOTA precinct, including identifying and liaising with artists, drafting contracts, monitoring budgets, completing risk assessments, adhering to workplace health and safety, and overseeing schedules.

SELECTION CRITERIA

The incumbent will be able to demonstrate skills/experience in:

  1. Professional knowledge of the Australian Arts Sector, and Australian and International Art, as relevant to the position.
  2. Experience in managing public art projects, including initiating projects, working with artists, concept development, contracts and budgets.
  3. Experience with installing public art, including working with contractors, complying with industry best practice – including WH&S, and maintaining a commitment to learning about current industry standards
  4. Knowledge of collection management practices, including cataloguing, loans, conservation, and collection management software
  5. Experience in audience engagement and public programming, including talks, workshops, and other activations.
  6. Demonstrated ability to work in a high energy and challenging interdisciplinary team environment, while remaining committed to achieving high quality, innovate results.
  7. High level of verbal, written and interpersonal communication and consultation skills to engage with multiple stakeholders and audiences.
  8. Knowledge of Australian Art History and a broad understanding of contemporary art and design practice.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications (or equivalent) in Curatorial or Museum Studies (or similar)

Casual Positions

CASUAL GALLERY TECHNICIAN

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Gallery Technician will be an experienced, energetic and enthusiastic team member of HOTA with strong attention to detail and high standards of presentation in the field of exhibition installation and display.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Carpentry
  • Painting, lighting and demounting of exhibitions.
  • Preparing, installing and demounting exhibitions

 

Other aspects of the role include assisting with collection management and administration tasks. Perform front-of-house duties and associated responsibilities, including coordination of volunteers, overseeing sales and providing information to the general public.

SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Demonstrated practical experience in construction, fabrication and painting of exhibition assets and appropriate work methods for utilising necessary power tools.
  • Undertake heavy object moving, including the loading and unloading of crates.
  • Ability to develop technical skills in the areas of audio visual, lighting and sound.
  • Ability to work in physically demanding situations, including working at heights.
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to prioritise work, meet deadlines, and work with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to work as an effective team member.
  • Good communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills relevant to the position.
  • Ability to gain understanding in work procedures relevant to the work area and apply innovative solutions and ideas in the workplace.
  • Ability to quickly learn, self-research, and adapt to new technology presented by artists/galleries.
  • Demonstrated relevant experience in a similar role or in a role requiring a similar skill set.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated ability in preparation, installation and demounting of exhibitions
  • Demonstrable knowledge of museum practices including object care and handling, packing and movement of artworks, appropriate display techniques and conservation principles, and broader industry practices.
  • Current forklift, EWP ticket, scissor lift, scaffold and rigging licenses and HR licence.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to legally operate a motor vehicle under a “C” Class Licence.
  • Ability to work on a 7-day roster generally within the hours of 6am – 9pm.
  • A willingness to undertake a Functional Capacity Evaluation to satisfy the inherent physical requirements of the position

CHEF DE PARTIE

POSITION OVERVIEW

We are currently looking for a skilled and experienced qualified chef (casual) who will assist in driving a creative and busy kitchen team. Serving breakfast and lunch for a café style menu.

  • Assist in the smooth service in a busy kitchen; including the daily preparation and presentation of food.

 

SELECTION CRITERIA

The incumbent will be able to demonstrate skills in:

  1. Previous experience working within a similar sized kitchen (café style menu)
  2. Excellent communication skills
  3. Working to a consistent level of quality with flair and an eye for detail
  4. Kitchen safety standards and sanitary requirements
  5. A genuine passion for food and the industry!

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Cert III Commercial Cookery or above
