The Ocean Between Us
The Ocean Between Us is a cross-cultural movement theatre work between Indian artist Diya Naidu and Australian artist Nadia Milford. At its heart, the project asks: Who are we beyond the social categories we carry? How can we bridge the “ocean” of binaries that divide us—across race, gender, economics, and the many identities we inhabit? What might we learn if we asked the forest, or listened closely to the ocean, these forces that do not know separation as we do?
How can we rest?
Two women meet at the intersection of dancing and writing, the personal and the political, the forest and the city—recognising that these same divides can also become points of connection. The work invites audiences into a space where communication unfolds both spoken and unspoken, posing the quiet but urgent question: Can the body teach us how to listen again? Indeed, can the dancing body be of service?
In their new project The Ocean Between Us, artists Diya Naidu and Nadia Milford explore a series of fundamental questions around humanity, ecology, feminism, and contemporary life. With the guiding question — “How can my dancing body be of service?” — the collaboration began as a digital residency on Instagram (@theoceanbetween_us) and has since moved into a shared studio practice.
This project is supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade through the Maitri Cultural Fund and HOTA.

Diya Naidu
Diya Naidu is an independent choreographer and dancer based in Bangalore and Mumbai. Her primary practices are rooted in movement with contemporary dance, yoga, kalarippayattu and partner work being some of her biggest influences.
Her work often involves embodied research over several years both with performers and community members. Some of these themes have been intimacy and touch, patriarchal penetration and more recently longing. Currently she is developing a solo that works with the testimonials of elderly Indians as a gentle counter to the hegemonic narrative of religious based nationalism. She is also in the process of creation an ensemble work with her collective, that investigates the slow apocalypse we are heading towards and the quest for home.
She along with co-creator Jozsef Trefeli were awarded the Pro Helvetia, co-creation grant and are making a work around ageing in dance.
Diya sees the artist as the key site for the integration of worlds and proposes Intimacy as a tool for resistance, a topic on which she recently gave a TedEx talk.
She founded and directs the Citizens of Stage Co Lab, a collective of movement artists that work together to make dance sustainable through community engagement and creating jobs for movers. Diya has worked in Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts, repertory company for almost a decade and has a diploma from the institute. She has toured all over India and the world as original cast in many of choreographer Jayachandran Palazhy’s pieces.
As an independent artist, her works have widely shown. Some noteworthy examples are - Red Dress Waali Ladki was curated at Serendipity Arts Festival, Goa and Think Big festival, Munich. Her duet Bardo Beings was the first contemporary dance curation at NMACC and The Korzo festival, Netherlands. Ceremony of Longing premiered at Kampnagel, Germany.
