Those Who Rock is back! 

Hundreds of Guitarists. One Outdoor Stage. One massive night of rock. 

200 everyday rockstars will perform on HOTA’s Outdoor Stage alongside a stellar line up of Aussie rock icons including Kram (Spiderbait), Dave Gleeson (The Screaming Jets), Patience Hodgson (The Grates), KISSperience, and The Good Band (feat. Members of Cheap Fakes/George/Delta Goodrem band), hosted by Myf Warhurst. 

This epic spectacle event is a celebration of live music, rock and roll, and the rebellious Gold Coast spirit with a full touring party of special guests from marching bands, to flash mobs, choirs and special effects, we’ve got it all! 

Bring your picnic blanket, wear your favourite band t-shirt (or your favourite rock outfit) - to those about to rock, we salute you! 

Grab your guitars and get involved 

Registrations are now open for Gold Coast rockstar enthusiasts and guitarists of all ages, experiences, abilities and backgrounds to get involved!  

Local rockstars will join a series of free community workshops which will be held from May to June in Community Centres right across the Gold Coast, to learn and rehearse a set list of iconic rock songs before taking to the stage for a huge concert under the stars.

Accessibility 

Those Who Rock is an Auslan Interpreted event with thanks to Auslan Stage Left.

Interpretation will be provided and presented on large screens (Picture in Picture) as part of the performance and viewable from any location.

Grab your guitar and join the THOSE WHO ROCK revolution to participate and perform with headline artists on HOTA’s Outdoor Stage – Registrations are now open!

Workshops will kick off on Saturday 30 May and be held in 7 Gold Coast regions over a period of 6 Weeks.
You can join us at Community Centres including, Pimpama, Helensvale, Runaway Bay, Broadbeach, Robina, Nerang, and Tugun to live out your rock star fantasies and prepare for an EPIC performance.

Registration and participation is FREE and all skill levels, ages, genders and abilities are welcome to join.
We ask that you attend a minimum of 2 workshops and be available for the rehearsal (Fri 5 July) and the Performance on Sat 6 July.

Kids Who Rock

Do you play an instrument and or sing?
Want to create a band and write your very own song? Musicians aged 12 to 18 years, can apply to join this free music program and perform as part of Those Who Rock.

Movers Who Rock

Movers, Groovers, dance enthusiasts of all abilities join the Those Who Rock flashmob! Jam packed full of fist pumps, hair whips and full body rocking moves, this is going to be a whole lot of fun dancing to a KISS classic!

Participant FAQs

What can I expect to get out of the experience?

Those Who Rock is community engagement project designed to bring communities together through the spirit of music. Participants will have the opportunity to;

- Engage and participate with likeminded people
- Meet new friends and networks
- Have the opportunity to perform with headline talent in professional main stage production
- Participate in your community and engage with your local regions with civic pride
- Show off your skills and live out your rock star dreams
- Learn new skills and songs
- Access to 2 discounted tickets to the performance for your friends/family.

When will the workshops start?

Workshops kick off from SAT 30 MAY – At various dates, times and locations depending on your chosen region (your team). You can see where and when all workshops are by clicking the Locations tab on the main webpage.

Where are the Workshops?

Workshops will take place in Community Centres all over the Gold Coast from the far south to the far north. Workshop locations are;

- Pimpama Community Centre
- Helensvale Cultural Centre
- Nerang Bicentennial Community Centre
- Runaway Bay Youth Centre
- Broadbeach Cultural Centre
- Robina Community Centre
- Tugun Community Centre

What do I need to bring to the Workshops?

Your Guitar, Amp, necessary leads, guitar tabs (printed out), willingness to learn with your community and your best Rockstar Stance!!

You might want to bring a water bottle to stay hydrated from all the Rock’n’Roll too.

I’m under 18 – Can I still participate?

Yes of course! Those Who Rock welcomes all ages to participate!

If you are under the age of 18, please provide contact information (email & phone) for a guardian when signing up. Under 10 years old must be accompanied by an adult for the workshops and performance.

I’m neurodiverse or have some accessibility requirements, can I still participate?

Yes, of course!

Please let us know when signing up, if there anything we can do to make your time comfortable with us. If you have any questions, please reach out!

Do I have attend all workshops?

No. But you will need to attend at least 2 workshops to be able to be prepared for the epic performance at HOTA. We do encourage you to come to as many workshops as possible so you are fully rehearsed and ready to perform. Plus, the workshops are a great way to meet new people, have a whole lot of fun and rock out with other budding guitarists.

Are any other dates mandatory to attend?

Yes. As well as the minimum of 2 workshops, you will also need to be available for;

- Main Stage Rehearsal: Friday 5 July (Late Afternoon/Evening - Time TBC)
- Performance Day: Sat 6 July (Afternoon & Evening until 9.30pm – Time TBC)

What are the Showcases?

The showcases are a mini performance in preparation for the big performance at HOTA.

The 2 Showcases will be held at;

- Helensvale Cultural Centre – Fri 21 June (Time TBC)
- Broadbeach Cultural Centre – Sat 22 June (Time TBC)

We would love all participants to be a part of these showcases to show off what you’ve learnt, prepare to be in front of an audience and meet all your fellow rock stars involved in Those Who Rock before the big day.

Can I go to multiple locations and workshops?

Of course! If you’re a super keen guitar legend and want to perform in multiple songs, you can come to as many different workshop regions as you like! You will still need to attend a minimum of 2 workshops per location/song.

What songs will I be playing?

Each region is designated a song to learn and play (Subject to change).

Every location will play one chosen song, plus be a part of the epic finale where ALL guitarist and regions take to the stage to perform ‘For Those About To Rock’ by ACDC.

Each song has been selected in the spirit of Rock and Roll and to cover the wide range of rock genres. You can pick your location based on song if you want!

- Helensvale: ‘Call Me’ by Blondie
- Tugun: ‘Proud Mary’ by Creedence Clearwater Revival
- Runaway Bay: ‘Black Betty’ by Spiderbait
- Nerang: ‘Simply the Best’ by Tina Turner
- Broadbeach: ‘Better’ by The Screaming Jets
- Robina: ‘I Wanna Rock & Roll All Night’ by KISS

All Regions: ‘For Those About to Rock’ by ACDC

Who will I be playing and performing with?

Community is at the heart of Those Who Rock, so you will be playing with other community guitarists in a massive participation performance.
Some headline Aussie rock legends such as Kram from Spiderbait, Dave Gleeson from the Screaming Jets and Patience Hodgson from the Grates will also perform alongside you with our House Band (The Good Band), KISSperience, Being Jane Lane and all hosted by TV Personality and Eurovision legend Myf Warhusrt.

Do I need to know how to play guitar?

Yes. While we will teach you the song, a basic level of understanding and how to play guitar is required. We ask that you come having a good understanding of your song/s once you receive your songbook. All skill levels from beginner to pro is welcome to come jam. You will be well supported by our team of music teachers, other players and producers.

I want to participate but I don’t have a guitar?

We will make Those Who Rock as accessible as we possibly can! Please contact our team at thosewhorock.hota@gmail.com and we will see what we can do to get you a guitar to use and make your rockstar dreams come true.

There are also other ways to participate through the Kids Who Rock, Band Program, Movers Who Rock a Flash Mobs of Dancers and various other community groups who will form part of Those Who Rock.

Consider yourself a dancer, dance lover or dance enthusiast? We have MOOVERS Who Rock a Those Who Rock Flash Mob you can participate in.

We are also running a Kids Who Rock – Original band & songwriting program for kids ages between 12-18 years old as part of Those Who Rock. This project, in conjunction with City of Gold Coast will see us form original bands, performing original songs as part of the Pre-Show Entertainment for Those Who Rock.

When is the Performance?

The main Performance will be held on SAT 6 JULY at HOTA Home of the Arts on the Outdoor Stage.

Is there any other info about the performance?

Those Who Rock will go for about 2 hrs with Interval.

The performance will be a massive stage show with professional production all delivered on HOTA’s Outdoor Stage concert spectacular. FAQs about the concert in Laid Back mode can be found below.
