Dive in: Joel Mesler’s Pool Party (2022) at HOTA on the Gold Coast

Take a deep dive into the works featured in Pop Masters: Art from the Mugrabi Collection, New York.

Dive into the mind of contemporary artist Joel Mesler, with his vibrant artwork Pool Party (2022) at HOTA Gallery from 18 Feb. Pool parties and the Gold Coast - a combination almost as iconic as Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Mesler melds his childhood memories from the ‘80s with cultural touchstones. He combines popular icons, typography, and humour to explore his emotions and the ways they’re ingrained in the culture. Pool Party (2022) depicts sun-soaked moments through a vibrant, surrealist composition.

Mesler’s emphasis on text and image, not dissimilar to works by Pop Art legends, appears light-hearted at first but often poses serious questions about universal themes of identity, healing, and acceptance.

In a world exclusive exhibition, Pop Masters: Art from the Mugrabi Collection, New York pairs Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, and Jean-Michel Basquiat alongside contemporaries inspired by their legacy.

The exhibition examines the influence these legends of Pop Art had on some of the biggest names in contemporary art. Whether inspired by their artistic philosophy or striking visual styles, the contemporary artists continue blurring the lines between fine art and consumer culture. Speaking to the objects and images of our everyday lives, they’re making art accessible for everyone in a new, novel way.

Experience this incredible collection of works up close, direct from New York and exclusive to HOTA.
