10 words or less – sum up the experience.
A wonderful opportunity to make work, money and friends.
How far did you get with your project to create an animated short film ‘Birds of Paradise’ that reimagines the Gold Coast Meter Maids origin story? What’s next for it?
I wrote a polished 20-page screenplay (with very helpful guidance from Wesley Enoch) and compiled a 90-page visual reference document using photos from HOTA’s archives. I then worked closely with my character designer to complete three hero keyframe artworks which sell the short film’s 60s-inspired animation style. My next steps for Birds of Paradise include developing a non-traditional funding model for production. I’m particularly interested in exploring the possibility of working with local tourism organisations/departments.
Did you discover anything new about the Gold Coast or about the Meter Maids during your residency?
My time researching Birds of Paradise was really special, and certainly deepened my appreciation for the Gold Coast’s 1960s architecture and style. I also learned a lot about local businesses of the time, and how their owners sometimes had personal connections with the meter maids. One local shared that meter maids used to visit her store and she’d offer them some coins to help make up their personal income.
What parts of the ArtKeeper program have been the most useful or interesting to you as an Artist?
Having a shared workspace and stable income for the first time in my creative career has been really rewarding. It’s afforded me a lot of creative growth and allowed for structure in a way I haven’t often experienced. I’ve also really loved being surrounded by other artists from different practices. I’ve made some beautiful friends.
Outside of this project, what’s next for you?
I’m currently in development on an adult animated series with Ludo Studio in Brisbane, and am working on a small slate of screen projects through Sad Man Studio, the production company I run with my husband. I recently installed my first public artwork in Brisbane City Council, and will eventually start working on a new solo exhibition (but hopefully not until next year, I’m very tired).
