Artist Statement

I create paintings that invite viewers to engage with open-ended narratives, triggering personal stories and dialogue.

My work explores the fluidity of perception, mirroring shifting conditions of light and atmosphere, to deepen understanding of existence.

Process driven, painting for me has never been about making pretty pictures, but rather a way of learning to see.

I aim to slow time, encouraging viewers to take time with art; fostering a contemplation that is almost a rebellion against our fast-paced lives.

About the Artist

Seabastion Toast is a passionate and prolific painter whose vibrant canvases capture the essence of light, pattern and the beauty of everyday moments. Combining a dynamic blend of abstract compositions with astute observations of daily life, she creates immersive worlds that beckon viewers to explore and connect with their innermost thoughts and emotions.

In 2024, Seabastion won the $40,000 Percival Portrait Prize. In 2023 she was awarded People's Choice in both the Portia Geach and Sunshine Coast Art Prizes. Seabastion recently won the $10,000 Darcy Doyle Award for Landscape painting for the second time, and was in the top eight finalists in the Evelyn Award for painters under 45. She also won two awards at the Glover Prize 2019. She is regularly a finalist in many prominent art prizes including the Mosman, Lester and National Still Life Awards.
