Artist Statement

Coming from a drawing background and dabbling in expressive abstract paintings for the past 19 years, I turned back to my love of drawing and started experimenting with charcoal around five years ago. I am drawn to the atmospheric magic that tonal work provides. Through my work, I invite the viewer to get lost in simplicity and let them float in the ever-changing mood.

About the Artist

Maraika Taylor Clairfayt is a Sunshine Coast born creative, living and working on the Gold Coast for12 years in fine arts and graphic design. With a love of precision and seeking perfection, drawing was her first love.

For the last five years she has been creating pieces in charcoal and loving the complexity it can deliver by just a slight erase or smudge. The photo realistic nature that can be achieved with charcoal creates feeling and mood and is one that has captured this artist.

Being a Highly Commended finalist in The Doyle's 2024 with a landscape charcoal has been one highlight this year. She is currently working on a series of oceanic landscapes and photo realistic still lives.

With two young children, she now calls Tallebudgera home.
