Artist Statement

Understanding signs can sometimes feel like deciphering a complex language. In Signs of Other Signs, Lyle Duncan asks us to look closer at the barrage of signs that typically occupy public spaces in our everyday lives.

By stripping these forms of their usual context and function and reinterpreting them using a transparent material, Lyle invites us to see each sign in a new light as they now act as "empty signifiers", open to interpretation, sparking curiosity and deeper reflection.

About the Artist

Lyle Duncan is an artist based in the Yugambeh Region (Gold Coast). He is interested in how meaning is constructed and construed collectively or individually. His work takes the form of sculpture, installation, performance, and digital-media and recontextualizes what is around us.

Lyle had a solo exhibition at Tweed Regional Gallery at the beginning of 2023, and is currently part of the Generate GC 2023 cohort. He was previously a finalist in the 2022 Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award and was commissioned by HOTA at the start of 2021 for the Terrace Billboard Commission. He has previously shown work at Metro Arts, The Walls and Wreckers Artspace.
