Artist Statement

I never feel compelled to photograph the beach or anything people flock to and find beautiful. I spotted this lone twisted towel on a clothesline in Kirra, not too far from the stunning coastline, and I knew instantly that I had to capture it.

These tiny observations are far more exciting to me than any landmark or grand view. I must search for these "twisted towel" moments in a way that opens me up to the not-so-celebrated beauty of our everyday life.

It's a humbling practice that is now a part of who I am and how I see the world.

About the Artist

Lucy Lumen is a photographic artist working exclusively with 35mm colour film. Lumen's work aims to create striking, graphic and minimalist images that make ordinary subjects appear abstract.

Placing a strong focus on colour and composition, as opposed to gear and technical ability, Lucy embraces simplicity in her imagery and camera choices.

Along with hosting a popular YouTube channel where she shares her photo walks and process, Lucy has exhibited in Germany, Melbourne, Sydney, and the Gold Coast. Lucy's work is featured in publications across the globe.
