Artist Statement
Beauty is Skin Deep speaks to being gracious to your fellow human. No matter the outward appearance, difference of opinion, nor one's chosen preferences that are opposites, through acceptance, one must see past self and have the courage to cease indifference.
We all have barbs formed by wounds of struggle, perpetration, disappointment, misunderstanding and grief that are covered through time to protect oneself.
Peer into the window of another's life and recognise the intricacies of their world. It will open your eyes to reveal the true nature of others and allow you them to shine in knowing their uniqueness by one act of acceptance.
About the Artist
Lisa Sorbie Martin is a Torres Strait Islander and German artist and designer, and her family's bloodline comes from Mer Island and Mua Island.
Lisa is her traditional Torres Strait Island name, and her namesake Sorbie is a 'wild water cherry' fruit that grows on Mer Island and whom her Grandmother was also aptly named.
Sorbie or Lisa, known by most, has an art practice on the Gold Coast, creating visual art, textile design, wearable art, ceramics, and public art. She is also a cultural educator and creative innovator, bringing culture and creativity together in any community through storytelling in art making. Lisa's strength lies in connecting Indigenous and non-Indigenous stories, cultural meaning, and environment, leaving a legacy of history and culture.
