#HOTA GALLERY COLLECTION APPEAL

“Please consider donating towards the acquisition of two significant works by an artist whose contribution to Australia's visual language is undeniable. With an instantly recognisable style that captures the vibrant energy of Australian coastal life - from his garden to the bay, to leisure filled weekends on sun-soaked golden beaches, the azure ocean and its vibrant coral reefs.

Ken Done’s long standing connection to the Gold Coast started in the late eighties, with his artwork capturing the coastal lifestyle of this region. I encourage your generous support to assist the acquisition of two remarkable, quintessentially Australian artworks from the personal collection of the much-loved artist and national icon, Ken Done.”

Between the flags II & III (diptych) 1996

Between the flags II & III (diptych) 1996

Drawn from Ken Done’s personal collection, Between the Flags is a vibrant expression of Australian beach life, capturing the energy and colour of the coastline. Done’s bold, expressive brushstrokes and sun-soaked palette evoke a joyful, almost nostalgic vision of summer. Using a playful and abstracted style, the work subtly recalls the iconic imagery of Max Dupain, whose photographs - such as Sunbaker - helped define the beach as central to Australian identity. Done reimagines this theme with warmth and movement, celebrating the coast as both a cultural symbol and a shared visual experience.

Thinking about a Sunday dive 2024

Thinking about a Sunday dive 2024

Bursting with saturated colour, playful brushwork, and a deep sense of awe and wonder, Thinking about a Sunday dive encapsulates Ken Done’s lifelong personal connection to one of Australia’s most extraordinary natural environments. Using his signature vivid colour palette, Done invites us on an underwater journey that prompts reflection on the fragility of the reef in the face of both natural and human-made threats. This message holds particular relevance for the Gold Coast, a region increasingly impacted by unprecedented weather events that threaten the ecology and natural beauty of its underwater environment.

#The HOTA Gallery Collection

HOTA Gallery proudly manages and curates a living conversation which reflects who we are through a wide spectrum of artistic expression. It captures bold statements, quiet moments, and challenges perspectives, utilising diverse mediums, methods, styles. The collection is more than a display of objects; it’s a catalyst for dialogue inviting us to look closer, to see the world through another's eyes, and to question our own preconceived notions.

The HOTA Gallery Collection is a dynamic legacy for the future; it cannot remain static to ensure this conversation remains current and relevant. HOTA Gallery is committed to continual development of the collection. This means actively embracing new voices, acquiring works that reflect contemporary issues, and seeking out artists who push creative boundaries. By doing so, we build a dynamic legacy - a rich and ever-expanding archive of our time that will challenge, inspire, and resonate with generations to come.
