Artist Statement

Deep Forest is a painting in a series of abstract works that seek to evoke a feeling of place. Deep blacks and iridescent greens suggest flashes and shades of light, filtered through dense foliage at the heart of the rainforest. Inspired by a solo walk to the Natural Bridge in the Gold Coast hinterland, the work speaks to the sense of enigmatic wonder felt upon standing alone, surrounded by giant and ancient trees, listening to the soundscape of the forest.

About the Artist

Christine Sharp is an Australian artist and author, currently living and working in Northern NSW on Bundjalung Country. Her practice includes painting, drawing, illustration, writing, photography and book design.

Recent and upcoming work explores colour, light, words and sound; considers weather, landscape, cycles and place; and meditates on the radical, living beauty of the cosmos and planet Earth.

Christine’s artwork has been exhibited at Art-Work Agency, Metro Arts, Percolator Gallery, Robyn Bauer Gallery, RAW Space, The View Factory, North Stores, Lundberg Gallery and oneB Gallery at M-Arts Precinct, and is included in many private collections across Australia. In 2023 Christine was in residence at Placemakers* as part of the Incubate* program, and she had a two-week residency at the Tweed Regional Gallery and Margaret Olley Art Centre in February 2024, as part of the Nancy Fairfax Artist in Residence program.
