Artist Statement

Ken Unsworth is a well-respected and inspiring artist who lives and breathes in his art and creativity. He is in his nineties and still producing new work. I first met him when I was an art student over forty years ago, and felt privileged to meet him recently and to photograph him. I decided on a triptych to show a more complete and rounded portrait.

About the Artist

Documentary photographer, Effy Alexakis, is represented in collections including the National Gallery of Australia, State Library of New South Wales, and Macquarie University Art Collection. Since early 1980s, Alexakis has become particularly well-known for capturing the diversity of Greek-Australian life, both within the nation and internationally.

Photography critic Robert McFarlane has suggested that whilst Alexakis utilises a “classical photojournalist’s visual grammar, her work evidences a clear sense of humanity... her portraiture has been singled out for its concise observation and natural rapport – they are portraits not only of likeness, but evoking a sense of personal gravitas, observational esteem, and dignity”
