5th National Indigenous Art Triennial: After The Rain

5th National Indigenous Art Triennial: After The Rain

The 5th National Indigenous Art Triennial: After the Rain features 10 multidisciplinary installations that celebrate intergenerational legacies and cultural warriors of the past, present and future. The National Indigenous Art Triennial brings together commissioned work by established and emerging First Nations artists from across Australia, creating an important platform for art and ideas. Each iteration of the Triennial is led by a First Nations curator with an original vision. Artistic Director for the 5th National Indigenous Art Triennial is Tony Albert, Girramay/Yidinji/Kuku-Yalanji peoples, one of Australia’s foremost contemporary artists. ‘I welcome everyone, to come and sit, reflect and respond to where we are, thinking and making art on Country. No matter where we come from, we can all engage through the universal language of visual art, and that’s why art is so powerful.’ - Tony Albert Albert weaves together projects by Alair Pambegan, Aretha Brown, Blaklash, Dylan Mooney, Hermannsburg Potters, Iltja Ntjarra Art Centre and Vincent Namatjira, Jimmy John Thaiday, Naminapu Maymuru-White, Thea Anamara Perkins, Yarrenyty Arltere Artists and Grace Kemarre Robinya, and Warraba Weatherall to tell stories through the universal language of visual art. These projects resonate with ideas about rebirth and cycles of cleansing.

This Moment: Highlights from the White Rabbit Collection of Chinese Contemporary Art

Exhibitions

This Moment: Highlights from the White Rabbit Collection of Chinese Contemporary Art is a demonstration of art’s power to document change, challenge perception and connect across cultures. Capturing the energetic spirit of 21st-century China, this extraordinary exhibition features bold, experimental artworks produced over the last 25 years that reclaim history, interrogate authority and reflect profound social change. Fearlessly engaging with complex global themes and China’s tumultuous history, the artists featured in This Moment challenge prevailing perceptions of modern China. From mesmerising light installations to powerful video art and large-scale sculpture, the experiential artworks in This Moment command attention with sheer scale and striking visual intensity, leaving their mark on your psyche and your social feed. Founded by philanthropist Judith Neilson in 2009, Sydney's White Rabbit Gallery showcases one of the world’s most significant private collections of Chinese contemporary art. Now in a Queensland exclusive, audiences can experience highlights from the collection at HOTA for free. This Moment: Highlights from the White Rabbit Collection of Chinese Contemporary Art features more than 35 works by 25 artists with artworks spanning video, photography, painting, light-based installations and monumental sculpture. The exhibition includes works by leading artists such as Geng Xue, Guo Jian, LuYang, Peng Hung-Chih, Xu Zhen, Zhang Dali and Zhang Peili.

Beneath the Surface

Beneath the Surface

Exhibitions

Beneath the Surface weaves together shifting perspectives on the presence of water within the Australian landscape. Where some artists look to natural waterways for inspiration, others create more symbolic commentary using water as a metaphor to reveal hidden histories and unseen power structures. Through painting, printmaking, photography and sculptural installation, water is examined as a channel for memory, culture and transformation. At the heart of the exhibition is the monumental painting The rainforest by William Robinson (1936-2025), a key work from the HOTA Collection. Here, the artist depicts the winding Botan Creek in Beechmont, a World Heritage-listed Gondwana Rainforest located in the Gold Coast Hinterland. The exhibition includes artworks on loan from the Jreissati Family Private Collection, alongside artworks from the HOTA Collection. HOTA wishes to thank the Jreissati family for their continued support. Loving: Photographs of Men in Love 1850s-1950s

Exhibitions

Loving draws from an extraordinary private archive of more than 4,000 photographs of men in love, assembled over two decades by partners and collectors Hugh Nini and Neal Treadwell. This project began with a chance discovery in an antique store in Dallas, Texas: a photograph of two men in love. That single image sparked a global search, taking Nini and Treadwell across the United States, Canada, Europe, the UK, Asia and Australia. Nini and Treadwell have since amassed thousands of images of male couples dating from the 1850s to the 1950s. This collection brings to light the lives and stories of male couples from around the world, giving voice to their courage, intimacy and enduring love. HOTA is proud to co-present this remarkable exhibition with the Delegation of the European Union to Australia in this Queensland exclusive. Image credit: Edward and his chum not dated.
