Today we’re happy to announce the 40 finalists for the 2022 Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award.

Following a nationwide call-out that generated over 260 submissions, 40 finalists were selected representing an exciting selection of cross-generational and culturally diverse artists working at the forefront of photographic media.

The winner of the Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award 2022 will be selected by Isobel Parker Philip, Senior Curator of Contemporary Australian Art at the Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW). The winner will be announced ahead of the opening of the 20th anniversary exhibition on Sat 17 September .

Isobel said:

The finalists reflect the strength and breadth of contemporary photographic practice. Their work is urgent, emotive and deeply thoughtful. Photography as a medium possesses a unique ability to both reflect and complicate the world around us, and these artists exploit the expressive potential and political force of the medium to full effect. I can’t wait to see the exhibition take shape.

To mark the 20th anniversary, a retrospective of previous winners and acquired works will be exhibited alongside this year’s finalists, highlighting the impact of the award over the past two decades.

Showcasing the next generation of Australian contemporary photographers between ages 5-17 years, an exhibition of the finalists of the Young Crop Photography Award will also be presented to coincide with the Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award.
