Nicholas Tossmann is a Gold Coast based Conceptual artist, his practice investigates the existential capacity of curiosity.
Nicholas utilises text to make intangible ideas tangible, via site specific installation, sculpture and video performance. Nicholas's practice invites an introspective response, asking the viewer to put into question themselves and their own perspective.
#The Project
Nicholas’s project is focused around alternative ways of asking the absurd question of why. He wants to explore the infinitely curious and existential space of human curiosity. Our innate ability to question in a existential capacity as an idea manifested into different forms.
Expanding on his text based practice, Nicholas will be creating sculptural text works that extrude and bend text to create a tangibility around intangible ideas. By physically distorting the words, new meaning and potential for interpretation is found, these sculptural forms can engage with viewers and spaces new ways.
He will also be experimenting with sound, in particular with repetition and distortion, bending text on another plane to better understand how we can engage with an idea or how an idea can be changed through a sensory distortion. Experimenting with sound and form, opens up avenues for these ideas to be combined together and create new outcomes.
