A wonderland of stories for kids

Kids Take Over is back! From Wed 30 Sept to Fri 2 Oct there’s a fun-packed program of free and low-cost activities at HOTA, perfect for creative kids this school holidays.

Brian Falkner, author of more than fourteen books for young children including The Tomorrow Code and Brainjack will be sharing tips on creating characters and weaving talks in our Write Like an Author workshops. Dedicated storytellers can also learn to Draw Like an Artist and add illustrations to their books – one step closer to having a book ready for publishing.

All ages can get moving outdoors with some sing-along time with Play School presenter Lucas Proudfoot, and a chance to learn the Haka with New Zealand performers from the ‘Drums of the Pacific’ performance troupe.

The one and only ‘Detective Louis LeBlanc’ is calling for Mini Detectives to help solve the case of a kidnapped canine in a roving performance around the parklands.

Come dressed as your favourite book character to our ‘Story Surprise’ sessions with special guests ‘Lauren and Anthony’ (from Paw Patrol Live), broadcasting a jam-packed storytelling and craft session from their Melbourne studio.

Keep an eye out for our Mini Reporters  (including Willow Whelan, pictured above) who will be covering the event for Kids Take Over I The Waves under the mentorship of arts journalist Bec Mac (POPSART) – news for kids, by kids.

Make sure you check out the incredible GAIA while you’re here, it’s pretty incredible, and there are a whole lot of GAIA inspired events in our WONDER program that are perfect for the whole family.

And don’t worry – we’ve taken the hassle out of lunch by including it in the ticket price for most events, plus the Terrace Café will be open so parents can get their caffeine fix.

There’s also film screenings, performance workshops and more – check out the full Kids Take Over program and our GAIA inspired WONDER program here.
