A big week at HOTA

It’s no secret that we love art and artists and last week the Gold Coast voted with their feet when it came to showing how much they love live performances, festivals and getting outdoors and in amongst it.

More than 13,500 people flocked to HOTA for our three-day ice cream and circus festival, cinema screenings and sell-out shows from comedy supremo Carl Barron. Indoors and out the precinct was packed with smiling faces, families enjoying the sun and friends getting together. 2020 was quite a ride. With a short period of closure, then operating with restrictions on numbers, we had to stay creative! We kept local artists working by funding online work and presented some incredible big-name artists up close in smaller gigs.

We kept building the momentum and as soon as we could we started bringing larger audiences back to the precinct for live music at the Outdoor Stage (we’ll never forget those crop circle we had to paint on the grass!) And with thanks to our audiences, who unfailingly supported our covid-safe measures, we’re now incredibly happy to be back operating at full capacity – yes that means our big indoor theatre is now back open for business.

To kick start the program in 2021, we were stoked to welcome comedy legend Carl Barron to the stage. Performing five sell-out shows to more than 5,400 people, it was the first time our theatre hit 100% capacity since we were forced to close our doors just under 12 months ago.

And last weekend we brought something brand new to HOTA, an ice cream and circus festival called Scoop! Our lakeside area was buzzing with excited faces, unexpected performances and LOTS of sticky fingers. More than 6,000 people, many of them coming to HOTA for the first time, roamed around the precinct and took a whirl on the giant Ferris Wheel while soaking up the circus vibe. With local musicians providing the soundtrack, the crowds were entertained by some amazing circus performances on and around the lake.

More than 120 artists were involved in bringing Scoop! to life and we’re proud that, with support from Arts Queensland, we commissioned new works from Circa, Flipside Circus and Company for Scoop!

And we’re just getting started! There’s lots more to come this year, including more Supper Club sessions, more events and live music on the Outdoor Stage and more unexpected art and experiences that you’ll want to share.
