2017 Christmas Commission

The 2017 Christmas Commission marked the beginning of an annual tradition at HOTA, Home of the Arts.

A regular competitor in the annual SWELL Sculpture Festival, local artist Dion Parker is known for his life-size stylised Lil Dusty red dog sculptures. We commissioned Dion to create a multitude of smaller resin dog sculptures wearing Santa hats which were then displayed in playful locations throughout the precinct. The sculptures were displayed from early December 2017 through to the first week of January 2018.

These seasonal sculptures aimed to create curiosity, but also to inspire and enrich the Gold Coast community in anticipation for Christmas and the New Year.

‘I’m thrilled to be working on the inaugural Christmas Commission,’ said Parker. ‘Lil Dusty has been popular with locals so we decided to make a whole bunch of them wearing Santa hats to help celebrate this festive season. Lil Dusty is about fun, humour and emotion. I like creating expression with a simple form and bold colours,’ he said.
