HOTA Gallery – Artist Open Call
In early 2021, HOTA will open the City’s new $60.5M Gallery.
Local artists are the heart of HOTA Gallery. As part of our commitment to support them, HOTA is fast-tracking its next stage of support with a new commissioning opportunity.
What’s it all about?
Up to 20 Gold Coast artists will be commissioned to create a body of work for a significant exhibition in the 2021 program. With the exhibition spanning 1000m2 inside the new HOTA Gallery as well as outside in the surrounding parklands, we invite submissions for indoor and outdoor works.
Artists’ work will be presented inside the Gallery, with enough space for each artist to show a suite of works: multiple wall works, a medium to large-scale installation, video projections, free-standing sculptures, performance, or any combination of these are possible.
Outside, in our parklands, artists will be selected to create new outdoor works. The landscape and surrounding infrastructure can accommodate varying scales of site-specific or stand-alone art. All types of outdoor art, of all forms and sizes and materials, that can be executed well in the outdoor environment are encouraged: kinetic, sound, ephemeral, static, responsive, digital, projection and performance.
What we’re looking for
We are looking for artists who are ambitious, locally engaged and globally aware. Work that is generous and curious from artists that, like us, believe that art has the power to unite, challenge, transform and delight.
This means art of all mediums. We welcome all kinds of work, including sculpture, painting, photography, video, performance, installation, printmaking and design-based submissions.
Inside the Gallery, work will be exhibited in our main exhibition space. This means generous space (both wall and floor space), six-metre ceilings, fully controllable lighting, and power and data capabilities.
Outside, our sprawling parklands provide myriad options. From the new HOTA Gallery’s immediate surrounds, to our lakeside and riverside.
What we’re offering
The full support of the Curatorial team will be available for you to develop your work, and the support of the Exhibitions team will be available for preparation and installation.
Each of the 20 artists will be paid a flat fee of $5,000 for their participation in the exhibition.
As the largest gallery outside a capital city, this is a unique opportunity to have your work presented on a national stage, in a AAA-rated gallery space, in 2021.
Are you eligible?
We want artists who:
- are based on the Gold Coast (i.e. whose home address has a Gold Coast post code) or;
- can demonstrate a significant link to the Gold coast (i.e. are from the Gold Coast but are now based elsewhere but continue to have strong connections to the Gold Coast) or;
- split their time between the Gold Coast and other locations in order to study, expand their work practice/opportunities.
Artists must be aged 18 years or older. As the exhibition aims to show the broad range of artists in the region, artists from all stages of their career are invited to submit.
Key dates and selection process
The exhibition will be curated by the HOTA Gallery team with initial input from a leading industry professional. This selection process will be based on the strength of submitted proposals and we invite everybody to apply; from established artists to those who are emerging.
Call out opens for submissions: Tue 19 May, 2020
Submissions close: Midnight, Fri 19 June, 2020
Successful artists notified: by Fri 3 July, 2020
We anticipate allowing six months for the development and production of the work. Working to a schedule agreed to with HOTA, successful artists will need to have all artwork completed by January 2021. Further details around the exhibition date will be announced in late 2020.
