Acting as an integral piece of the cultural precincts new puzzle, the HOTA Fly Tower (see pic) is now set to become an artistic beacon for the entire city. This huge cube sits atop HOTA and will remain as an iconic landmark; transformed through art. You’ll see it from the road, the air, high rises and the river proudly dropping a creative pin as the new cultural hub of the Gold Coast.
THIS IS A CALLOUT for ALL ARTISTS and artist lead teams to express your interest in becoming the commissioned creator of what is set to become one of the most iconic pieces of public art on the Coast. Whether you’re based locally, interstate or overseas, geographic location doesn’t limit your ability to vie for this prestigious artistic opportunity. Both individual artists and artist-lead collaborations are welcome to submit concepts for consideration by a selection panel of nationally renowned artistic professionals. A mural, lighting installation, temporal sculpture or organic spectacle are all realistic options; everything of a well-considered artistic nature is welcome for submission to transform this blank urban canvas into an uplifting visual gift for the city.

Q: Do I need to submit a concept design in this first Expression of Interest (EOI) stage?
A: No. In this first stage, we just want to know more about you, your artistic practice and your team (if you have one). Refer to the Expression of Interest Info Pack below for selection criteria and submission requirements. Up to three artists will be invited to a concept design stage and paid a $2000 fee to develop designs.
Q: How big is the area to be painted?
A: The HOTA Fly Tower is essentially a cube atop the Arts Centre building. This commission is open to artists to paint three of the four facades: north (appx 215 sqm), east (appx 540 sqm) and south (appx 215sqm) walls are available for one wrapped design or a series of works across the available walls. HOTA branding will remain on the Western façade. Measurements provided in the EOI info pack are estimates only, and artists must verify these as they progress through concept design and detailed design stages.
Q: What do I need to consider in my proposed budget?
A: Refer to the practical considerations section of the EOI Info Pack. You will need to consider many elements including, but not limited to: artist fees, materials, access equipment, documentation, and safety gear.
Q: What kind of lifespan is expected of this artwork?
A: The installation and materials used are expected to last a minimum of 5 years.
