HOTA Gallery Launch Weekend

On Sat 8 May  we will be throwing open the doors to our brand new Gallery and  celebrating  with a weekend to remember. Our first major exhibition, SOLID GOLD: Artists From Paradise, celebrates the diversity, richness and ambition of the Gold Coast  with new works indoors and out.

To continue the celebrations, our Outdoor Stage will  host to some of the Gold Coast’s most exciting new artists alongside a few homegrown favourites. The Saturday program of music will serve as a vibrant soundtrack to the buzz of activity taking place at the Gallery and it’s surrounds.

The line up on the Outdoor Stage  features the powerhouse soul vocals and fiery frenetic instrumentation from Hussy Hicks, dreamy psych pop sunshine from EchoWave, the joyous colourful sounds of Samba, Bossa Nova from Augusta Street, the hip hop, soul, traditional rhythms from young First Nations performers, Jarulah and Blackline Band and funky, house, disco and soul vibes from DJ Felix.

More about HOTA Gallery Launch Weekend

Jarulah and Blackline Band, featuring special guest vocalists

A group of young indigenous musicians living in and around the Bundjalung Nation. Although they come from all across the country, they’ve been  brought together by their love of music and culture. The Jarulah and Blackline Band’s sound ties hip hop and soul together with their traditional rhythms. Their songs tell stories about pride in their identity alongside realities they see in their communities across the nation, while always carrying the message of hope for our future together.

The Collective formed out of a youth initiative by The Kinship Festival in Murwillumbah which brought together young indigenous musicians who were recognised individually in their community with the hope it would provide a platform for them to showcase their music together.

Since forming at The Kinship Festival in 2019 they have gone on to play other events and festivals such as Splendour In The Grass 2019 and Jurakai Surf Competition Cultural Night amongst others

EchoWave

Since 2018, Gold Coast power pop outfit EchoWave have been enchanting audiences across the east coast with their nostalgic and technicoloured pop rock soundscapes. With 2 EP’s and 3 singles under their belt, their ability to refresh the sounds of era’s past and create new contemporary classics has garnered them comparisons from Tame Impala to The Beach Boys, with EchoWave’s latest single ‘I’ll Be Your Friend’ flirting 70s New Wave and Yacht Rock influences while maintaining a strong pop sensibility.

After playing headline shows at Burleigh Bazaar and Elsewhere, supporting acts such as Melbourne’s ORB and Brisbane’s Sycco, EchoWave have become known for their eclectic and energetic live performances and will leave you wanting more.

House of Felix

Felix. is a house music project fronted by Lara Damelian.

Emerging into the scene in 2019 as a songwriter and vocalist with her indie dance project ‘Fond of Felix’, the transition into DJing in the house and techno genre came as a surprise. Playing, performing and producing house music somehow felt natural and allowed her to express her musical and artistic creativity in a different way.

Now at age 21 and based in the Gold Coast, Felix has played at local and Brisbane venues, private events and also hosts music events with other local DJs under the title ‘Ravewave’. She is always on the hunt for more live opportunities.

Keep an eye out for new mixes in a range of styles including classic house, minimal, techno, deep house and funk. Felix. original material will be dropping soon.

Hussy Hicks

Critically acclaimed Australian act, Hussy Hicks are a tour de force featuring Leesa Gentz’ powerhouse soul vocals and Julz Parker’s revered guitar skills. Prolific and accomplished musicians, Hussy Hicks have honed their sonic dexterity over the past 12 years with six studio albums, multiple industry awards and more than 1,000 live shows under their belts, from Australia’s biggest blues, roots and folk festivals to 15 plus international tours, which now sell out across Europe.

Known for their emotive lyricism, energetic live shows and fiery, frenetic instrumentation, it’s no surprise Hussy Hicks have staying power. From Gold Coast Artist of the Year and Album of the Year wins to Queensland Music Award and Golden Guitar nominations, their critical accolades extend even further, with guitarist Parker being touted by Australian legend, Phil Emmanuel as ‘Australia’s top female guitar player’ and voted fifth in Bluesfest’s Guitar Hero fan poll, among Santana and BB King.

The Augusta Street Band

Augusta Street is a Brazilian Bossa Nova, Samba, Funk and Soul band based on the Gold Coast. The band was formed in 2020 – while the world was having a break, they found the time to connect, bringing their ideas together to create a band that would showcase the beauty and versatility of Brazilian music, while using its flavour to spice up some of the world’s favourite songs.

Rua Augusta (Augusta Street) is the main artery of São Paulo city’s nightlife scene. It is a place that you can find anything at any time. Food from all over the world from restaurants to corner snack shacks and street vendors. Hole-in-the-wall bars, nightclubs thumping from midnight till noon and live music venues – you’ll find a carnivalesque atmosphere almost every night of the week. This amazing place, it’s multicultural atmosphere, is the inspiration behind what Augusta Street Band brings to the stage. Their goal is to share with you the joy that comes out of Brazil’s most popular alternative street.
