Flickerfest – Electrifying Short Films!

Australia’s largest short film festival returns to HOTA in 2020. Flickerfest remains a platform for celebrating the most entertaining and innovative short filmmaking from Australia and around the world. Don’t miss this one-off chance!

Celebrating 29 years in 2020 Flickerfest is Australia’s only Academy® qualifying and BAFTA recognised short film festival and largest short film competition. After Flickerfest’s 10 -day festival at Bondi Beach in early January selected highlights are now on tour to over 50+ venues from Jan-May.

The Flickerfest 2020 programme was selected from 3,600 entries, from 100 countries, giving local Flickerfest audiences the first look at the hottest short films in the world today.

Best Of Australian Shorts

Flickerfest is thrilled to celebrate a diverse range of stories from across Australia that celebrate our unique identity and culture with our Best Of Australian Shorts programme, selected from 7 programmes in our Academy® qualifying competition in Bondi.

Highlights include: The delightful comedy ‘Chicken by Papuan-Australian director Alana Hicks; the moving drama ‘A Day In Your Life a meditation on homelessness, that is quiet, thoughtful and deeply human, and the multi award winning animation ‘Rebooted’ – It’s not easy for a movie-star to age, especially when you’re a stop motion animated skeleton monster!

Flickerfest at HOTA will also include the Gold Coast premiere of some amazing short films with Gold Coast connections fresh from Flickerfest 2020 Bondi.

Featherweight was directed by Sam Lara, who completed a Bachelor of Film and Television at Bond University in 2015 where she decided to commit completely to a career in the film industry and is now working full-time as an Assistant Director on feature films, TV series and TVCs.. This stunning short, the story of stubborn and scrawny 13-year-old Tas who gets dumped on her father’s doorstep and turns to boxing in an unlikely and desperate attempt to win him over, was recently awarded Best Narrative Short at the Vegas Movie Awards.

The hilarious It’s Christmas, starring Gary Sweet, was produced by Kyle McCallion who grew up locally in Upper Coomera. Kyle, who studied at both Upper Coomera State College and Oxenford State School, will be in attendance at the screening to introduce his film. It’s Christmas screened as part of Flickerfest in Bondi in January after a highly successful International Film Festival run including at Austin Comedy Short Film Festival and London Comedy Film Festival.

A visual poem based on Orpheus and Eurydice, Orpheate, Directed by Ruby Bell and Produced by Mandy Walker (Award-winning cinematographer for Hidden Figures and Baz Luhrmann’s Australia) is a modern-day take on the beloved Greek myth which follows a young musician’s journey to the underworld in search of his lover lost to a fatal snake bite. Both Ruby and Mandy, currently working on Baz Luhrmann’s new Elvis film on the Gold Coast, will be in attendance at the screening.

Wine Lake written by and starring Ailis Logan was developed over the two years Ailis studied at The Gold Coast Warehouse Workshop Acting Studio. This moving and surprising drama recently won the audience award at the Chicago Irish Film festival.
