Position Overview

Reporting to the Curatorial and Engagement Manager, the Senior Curator is responsible for developing and delivering an exceptional program of visual arts and design exhibitions, as well as accompanying educational, public program and engagement offers.

You will play a leading role in contributing to an innovate and engaging Australian and International exhibition program that boosts the visitor experience and encourages repeat visits and precinct wide engagement. 

You will work closely with colleagues across the HOTA precinct and Experience Gold Coast, to deliver great visual arts experiences and grow new audiences. Above all you will be a champion of arts and culture on the Gold Coast and embrace the growing ambition of HOTA and Experience Gold Coast.

About the Role:

As the Senior Curator, you will play a leading role within the Gallery and Visual Arts team, with key tasks involving;

  • Developing an innovate and engaging Australian and International exhibition program that boosts the visitor experience and encourages repeat visits and precinct wide engagement.
  • Leading the development of public programs, education and exhibition resources including tours, floor talks, written material, events and presentations. 
  • Supervising and mentoring the public program and education coordinators through professional development and regular feedback. Developing and modeling a culture of continuous improvement, including building commitment to shared goals.
  • Crafting and delivering talks about HOTA exhibitions, being a moderator on discussions with artists and industry specialists about culture and arts, and giving guided tours to gallery visitors and guests.
  • Development of written material and delivering of training to support the Visitor Services team in their understanding and interpretation of all exhibitions and installations in the Gallery.
  • In line with HOTA’s collection management plan, contribution to the development of the permanent collection through identification and advising of appropriate purchases, gifts and donations to the institution including those under the Cultural Gifts Program. Collection management will also include identifying works for deaccession and developing the corporate collection. 
  • Identifying and facilitation of commissioning opportunities and longer-term creative partnerships, including contract management, and identifying funding through appropriate grant platforms and sponsorship.

About You

  • Equivalent experience in a Gallery or museum environment.
  • A tertiary qualification in visual art, curatorship and / or museum studies.
  • Significant knowledge of gallery operations and experience in working with the National Standards of Australian Museums and Galleries.
  • A working knowledge and experience using Vernon Collections Management System or similar is desirable.
  • Current QLD Police check (or willingness to obtain).
