In this session, artist René Bolten will guide participants through a workshop exploring still life and the loaded object. Participants are asked to bring an object that has special meaning for them to the workshop. René will engage participants in the process of painting two representations of their chosen object as a diptych. The first as a still life painting of the object, exploring its simple visual qualities, and the second a painting representing the participant’s loaded memories, feelings and experiences of their object.
René will also introduce his art practice and show a selection of some of his recent and past still life works and talk to some of the paintings from the Italian Renaissance Alive exhibition, reflective of the themes of his workshop.

#Artist Bio
Dutch born, Australian based artist and educator René Bolten hails from The Hague, Netherlands and studied at the Amsterdam Academy for Visual Art Education. Bolten has exhibited nationally and internationally in numerous solo and group exhibitions and was awarded the Northern Rivers Portrait Prize in 2013. His preferred genres are still life and portraiture that he creates from his studio in Georgica, Northern Rivers NSW.
His recent solo exhibition, Still life more than just objects, at Tweed Regional Gallery explored his fascination with painting still life using ordinary personal objects, loaded with memory through everyday use. From April 27 – May 25, 2024, Rene’s solo exhibition The Painter's Studio | Het Schildersatelier, is on display at the Lone Goat Gallery in Byron Bay; this new body of work pays homage to Rene’s studio and explores the objects and tools of his daily art practice.
